Are tablets and kindles replacing books?

Are tablets and kindles replacing books?

Kindles and tablets have made it so much easier and more fun than reading a book, so why should we read books if we have kindles and tablets?
Kindles and tablets have screen that light up, so it’s very easy to read in the dark unlike books where you would have to have a light on to see what you are reading . Also kindles and tablets are usually a lot less heavy than a book, this makes them easier to use than book and will not give you aching arms by the end of the book.

Instead of having to own many books that will take up a lot of space, you have all the books you need and want at just one touch of a button.
Even though tablets and kindles are already so good technicians are trying to come up with new ideas such as apps, size and weight for the new tablet/kindle they will be bringing out not just to satisfy the public but because everyday companies are coming up with new ideas that will blow the others out of the water. There are so many different kindles and tablets out there that is so hard to choose which one. But no doubt as soon as you buy one there will be a new one just coming out that’s even better than the one you got and the one you‘ll want even more.

A member of the public has commented her opinion of the kindle fire the comment says ‘First Kindle I have purchased and confess I cannot stop using it! Arrived within estimated delivery date, protectively packaged and in good order. Had it up and running within a short time of getting it linked to my broadband server. Still working my way through the different apps, great Amazon offer plenty of useful free ones to download. May day operators have been brilliant whenever I contacted them for advice on setting up, great they can take over your screen if you prefer. Good to see a friendly face on screen which is quite a novelty! Compact, pleasant weight to handle. Speedy connection to the internet, far better than my laptop. Recommend you purchase an appropriate case, to protect and keep the Kindle clean, glad I did. Recommend you buy a stylus for accurate screen selection and download a decent version of anti virus and spyware to protect your software. Fast charger which was already included in the package was a welcome bonus. Have used my Kindle extensively for surfing the web, e-mail, and Skypeing so far, but also have a few more free apps to try out like BBC iPlayer. Would recommend the Kindle Fire HDX to others without hesitation, love it!’

What is social networking?

What is social networking?

List of some social networking sites
  •  Facebook
  •  Twitter
  •  My space
  •  Gmail
  •   Bebo
  •  Yahoo
  • And much more ……

Social networking is very popular; it allows you to contact people all around the world. Signing up to a social networking site can be very simple you only have to answer a few questions about yourself like your date of birth and email address, on most social networking sites you can hide these details if you wish. On social networking sites you can add photos and videos; you can also privately message someone or speak on your profile which would not private to everyone.
In your profile is where people will find out things about you and you can post your thoughts and hobbies to everyone able to view it, this would not be private this would be seen by your friends and possibly members of the public depending on the settings you have selected. There are also parts where you can but your favourite book, music, films etc.

By using social networking sites you are able to communicate with people that may not be close enough to meet, you are able to play games, chat to more than one person at once, share photos and feelings with friends. Social networking sites can be used to video chat with people all across the world; people have become famous through social networking sites by uploading videos of them singing, pictures of their art work or dancing.

Unfortunately, there can be bullying through these sites, which could lead to suicide. The amount of suicide in the UK from bullying over social networking sites has risen by 25% in the last year. So parents and users have to be very careful with the people their adding and speaking to.

Personally I love using social networking sites, life would not be the same without them.

Cyber bullying & what it causes

Cyber bullying & what it causes

What is cyber bullying?
Cyber bullying is bullying that takes place using either the internet or a mobile phone, cyber bullying is most likely to take place on a social networking site Facebook, twitter, my space etc. Most teenager will experience cyber bullying at some point in their life, some worse than others.

Effects of cyber bullying
Cyber bullying can cause severe depression and anxiety. If people are told the same things for a period of time they will start to believe it, this will cause other issues such as an eating disorder, hating yourself, sometimes it can push people off the edge, causing them to no longer want to live so they will attempt suicide. Cyber bullying is many different things but it is spread by IT.

Here is a true story posted by pure sight (Ryan Halligan 1989 - 2003 | PureSight | Real Life Stories)

Ryan Halligan 1989 - 2003
‘John and Kelly Halligan lost their thirteen year old son, Ryan, to suicide on October 7, 2003. Ryan was a student at Essex junction, Vermont, after Ryan’s death they found out that Ryan was tormented and humiliated at school and online. Ryan’s father says: “a few days after his funeral I logged on to Ryan’s AOL IM account because that was the one place he spent most of his time during the last few months. I logged on to see if there were any clues to his final action. It was in that safe world of being somewhat anonymous that several of his classmates told me of the bullying and cyber bullying that took place during the months that led up to his suicide. The boy that had bullied him since 5th grade and briefly befriended Ryan after the brawl was the main culprit. My son the comedian told his new friend something embarrassing and funny that happened once and the friend (bully) ran with the new information that Ryan had something done to him and therefore Ryan must be gay. The rumour and taunting continued beyond that school day … well into the night and during the summer of 2003.” ’
Ryan’s father john spends his time touring the United States and Canada, he meets young people on his journey, and he gives speeches to them about education, bullying, cyber bullying and teen suicide. He also created a website in his son’s memory.

Ryan was only 14 years old when he committed suicide.

Is smart phone technology changing the way we live?

Is smart phone technology changing the way we live?

Smart phone technology has become a big part of people’s lives, people all around the world are using smartphones but is it affecting the way we live?

Mobile phones have changed from year to year. They used to be simple, big mobiles that could call people but not do much else .Now mobile phones have expanded into a worldwide sensation, with different types, styles and sizes. But unlike its ancestors the newest smartphones are slim and very light, they now have social networking/internet, apps, video/camera, texting and much more.

Thanks to this new way of socialising, people will be able to communicate by a touch of a button, but experts are asking “is this really communicating, not being able to talk face to face. Talking to each other has lately become typing words and sending them. This is fine sometimes or if you’re in a hurry, but it’s not the same as being with the person your texting. This could affect your confidence to speak in public and affect the relationship you have with the person on the other side of the phone.”

On the other hand mobile phones are useful they can quickly contact people in the case of an emergency, they can look up details you may need or they can just occupy your whilst your waiting for something. They also allow communication all around the world, if your friend moves to a different country how you can contact them when their thousands of miles away, well thanks to new smartphone technology you can contact them using  face time, calling/texting, social networking… Facebook, twitter etc.

In my opinion smartphones are great I use them all the time. I find them very easy to use and they are great for communicating with my friends, I don’t think my life would be the same without smartphones. When I’m not home, through mobiles I can be sure that people at home are okay. I think we use mobiles so often that we forget about what they do and how we use them in our life. Having a mobile saved one member of my family, because we were able to use our mobile to contact the emergency services.

Is the internet changing the way we see ourselves?

is the internet changing the way we see ourselves?

People all around the world are being overloaded with pictures of what people are saying is the perfect body, this perfect body is usually a very skinny girl with perfect teeth , hair and skin. These pictures are seen by all and especially teens who compares themselves to these girls, if they don’t feel the look like these girls they get very self-conscious and start hating who they are. Once they begin to hate themselves they try to change the things they hate.

A worrying amount of teens now have eating disorders and low self-esteem because of images they have seen that websites and tabloids have said is the perfect person. Eating disorders spread through social networking sites and are seen by millions, once one person has seen many more see it to. And when a person gets anorexia or an eating disorder others start thinking about how they feel about their own body.

True story about and eating disorder:

Anne
‘At age 16 Anne weighed 110 lbs. But a boy told she wasn't asked to a school dance because she was fat. He was teasing but she was inclined to take it seriously. And she started counting calories.
First, Anne skipped lunch. When swimming suit fashions appeared in stores she dropped breakfast. She obsessively weighed her food and calculated the calories that she consumed. By summer her daily intake had plummeted to some 300 calories a day. Anne weighed 93 pounds. Her knees, elbows and fingers often swelled uncomfortably. She complained that her fingernails broke easily and her hair had split ends. When her friends and parents deplored her emaciated frame, Anne deplored "the ripples of fat" on her legs and her stomach.
She adamantly refused to see a doctor until she fainted while boarding the school bus. In the fall, she cut her forehead; her parents took her to the emergency room. Appalled by her emaciation, the physician said Anne suffered from anorexia nervosa and immediately admitted her to the hospital.’

Laurie

‘Laurie a 9th grader, loved parties especially when she discovered her own answer to weight control. After gulping down several doughnuts and cupcakes and an entire bag of chips she slipped into the bathroom and made herself throw up! It was the ideal compromise between her inability to control her eating and her desire to lose weight. But after several months of bingeing followed by self-induced vomiting, Laurie's throat hurt constantly and her dentist urged her to brush more thoroughly because her teeth were in poor condition. Worse, she could neither stop her binges nor keep her food in her stomach after a normal meal. When she developed a serious ulcer, she finally admitted her binge-purge routine to her doctor. He diagnosed bulimia nervosa and sent Laurie to a psychiatrist, who created a treatment plan that would help her return to healthful, normal eating habits.’
